The perfect wardrobe is an ongoing project - with the trends changing every minute and new items appearing on the 'must-own' list, it's hard to say you own your ideal wardrobe. With minimalism being an underlying theme through most trends today, I would love to show you how to build up your capsule minimalist wardrobe, and the essentials you need to start!
The minimalism approach to most things turns back to the basics in life, and simplifies things down. Having a minimalist wardrobe is not about buying those budget tops at kmart for $5 each - it is about buying fewer, but higher quality investment items that will last you 10 times longer than the budget options. I started this mindset at the beginning of 2015 - when I decided I was tired of buying more, but frankly worse items when I went shopping. These would maybe last a few months, then either be off the trend scene or broken in some way. So, with the same amount of money, I realised I could buy one good quality top that would last me years, or 3 tops that would last me a few months.
I felt like this change was the right thing for me - so I decided to start my new and improved wardrobe. I saved my money a little bit longer than impulse shopping as soon as I earned it, and I was smarter about what I bought. Suprisingly, once I started reducing my wardrobe down leaving just the essentials, I found I had more to wear, and I felt more confident and style conscious in the outfits. A capsule wardrobe is like it sounds: a small collection of pieces that can mostly all be worn together in different combinations. Over the past year I have built up my capsule wardrobe and I love it so much. Consider giving it a try, it's fun!
The items that ring a bell to me when I say 'minimalist wardrobe' are striped tees, grey coats, black slouchy pants and white sneakers. These pieces are staples for building any wardrobe, so along with a few other pieces, here is how to build up your wardrobe - the minimalist way!
What you need to think about when buying clothes:
- Yes, this is so on trend right now, but will it still be in 2-3 months time? Will I still want to wear it then?
- What is it made out of? Does the material feel good quality or plasticy?
- Will it go with at least 3-5 things in my current wardrobe?
These 3 questions are probably the most important. So, what does the perfect minimalist wardrobe look like? Here's where to start!
Basic tops include white, black and grey t-shirts, and the classic horizontal stripe. My absolute favourite is the Assembly Label Stripe Tee, I have both the long and short sleeved versions and love them so much. Here is a selection of more basic tops:
the little black dress
Every woman needs a little black dress of course! You have to include this in every wardrobe, so if you don't already have a LBD, get one! I especially love this V-neck dress with pockets by Weathered.
Black trousers are an absolute staple. They're flattering, comfortable and go with any top. I have been loving this linen pair (worn above) from asos!
White sneakers are definitely on trend, but they also double as a long term essential. Chunky, comfy and effortless, these are the type of shoes you can throw on and go. I own two pairs of Adidas Superstars from asos (they are SO hard to find in your size so snap them up while you can!) and I can't stop wearing them!
bags and purses
A beautiful black bag can be worn with every outift. Only one is essential and you're sorted! I'm loving bucket bags at the moment, especially this one from asos!
Of course outerwear is also essential, I think grey is a great way to add a tinsey-bit more depth to a monochrome outfit. Grey coats, jackets and jumpers all look gorgeous too! I have a last season grey coat from asos but I absolutely love this dark grey coat from asos.
Once you have these basics done and dusted, you can choose to add your personal flare with colour, or stick to the monochrome and just add more! I love to occasionally opt for some particular trends, like culottes and maybe a tiny bit of colour!
I hope this gave you a bit of inspiration to begin your minimalist wardrobe, you can create endless looks with the right combinations of tops, trousers and coats.
PS. Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales are on so it's the perfect time to begin shopping!
